Fast Track School Helps Land Global Factory in Upstate New York

(April 30, 2012) Convincing Global Foundries to build a factory in Malta, New York, was a group effort. Once of the factors that convinced the company to invest in Malta? Schools that could help feed an ongoing supply of potential employees. Students at Technologies and Sustainable Industries Early College High School, an EDWorks partner school in the Smart Scholars program with the State University of New York, are getting a jump start on career readiness and positioning themselves on a pathway towards career success.

Two EDWorks New Start Schools Cited as Evidence of Michigan’s Path to a Brighter Future

(April 26, 2012) In a recent National Education Association article, writer Brenda Ãlvarez shared working being done in Michigan to improve education. As the industry in Michigan declined over the past decade and people left the state in search of better job prospects, school districts felt the impact. Ãlvarez used two schools that EDWorks has been partnering with as examples of the work being done to get schools back on track. EDWorks coaches work with students at Willie E. Thompson Middle School Middle School so kids graduate prepared to enter high school.

EDWorks New Start Grad Heading to Wharton School of Business

(April 23, 2012) Several students at Austin East Magnet High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, a former EDWorks New Start partner, were awarded $4,000 college scholarships from Project GRAD. Project GRAD is an enrichment program and helps kids leave high school ready for college. Every student at Austin East Magnet High School is eligible for one of the scholarships upon entering school as a freshman. In order to be awarded one, they have to meet certain requirements GPA and program requirements.

EDWorks is Reinventing the Senior Experience

In a KnowledgeWorks World of Learning blog post, Michele Timmons, the Manager of Partnership Development for EDWorks, offered some answers to a Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Reporter Karen Farkas looks at the senior year of high school and if it’s really useful in preparing high school students for college. Timmons shows that EDWorks unique models take full advantage of that year of school.

Detroit 2020 Looking at Detroit New Start School

(April 5, 2011) A recent episode of Detroit 2020 focused on Central Collegiate Academy, an EDWorks New Start school. The show featured interviews with the school principal, EDWorks President Harold Brown and New Start Technical Assistance Coach Randall Sampson.

Evening the Ratio Between Men and Women in STEM

(March 30, 2012) EDWorks STEMLab schools focus on STEM skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Nationally, more careers in these areas are held by men than women. In Washington State, the numbers still favor men, but the ration is not so large. That is because of schools like Delta High School in Richland, Washington, an EDWorks STEMLab school. Students at that school have the opportunity to meet with 25 to 30 professionals in STEM careers each week and those meetings create job opportunities.

Toledo Features Early College and STEM Options for Students

(April 1, 2012) When students in Toledo, Ohio, make a selection on which high school to attend, they have multiple options. Among the choices: an early college high school and STEM-focused school, both magnet schools. Ohio recently ranked all public high schools by test scores and Toledo Early College High School, an EDWorks Fast Track partner, ranked 17th in the state and was the top-ranked school in the Toledo metro area.

High School Students Get to Sample College Experience

(March 31, 2012) To help raise awareness of early college high schools, freshman and sophomores from Massena Central High School and Ogdensburg Free Academy got to experience a day as a college student. They spent the day on the SUNY Canton campus, as part of the Smart Scholars program, of which EDWorks is a partner. Activities included a campus tour and investigating a mock crime scene. “Our goal is to have students earn a minimum of 20 college credit hours before they graduate from high school,” said Adrienne C.

As a wrap-up to Early College High School Week 2012, Fast Track National Director Andrea Mulkey wrote an op-ed for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. She discusses the power of early college high schools to help more students have access to college.

P-Tech Getting Students on the Fast Track to Careers

(March 29, 2012) P-Tech, or Pathways in Technology Early College High School, is preparing students for careers at top technical companies. As part of the Smart Scholars program, EDWorks is working with this Fast Track school in partnership with the New York City department of education, the New York City College of Technology, the City University of New York and IBM. The head of corporate social responsibility at IBM used to be New York City’s deputy schools chancellor.
