The STEM Strand: When all students are inspired. All succeed.

EdWorks STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) schools are designed to inspire all students, not just the brightest and best, to succeed in a challenging science and mathematics environment.

STEM schools are designed with two key academic goals: All students will complete a rigorous, college ready curriculum; and the four-year course of study will have an intense focus on preparing students for academic and professional futures in science, technology, engineering and math.

The design of STEM schools will vary based on the particular needs of an individual community. There are, however, core elements that EdWorks believes are essential to the design and development of a successful STEM high school:

  • Open enrollment to all students, regardless of past academic performance, with a deep interest in pursuing the study of the STEM disciplines.
  • Personalized learning experiences for students, personal growth plans and differentiated instruction for students.
  • A rigorous curriculum that prepares all students for success in college - can be demonstrated through a combined STEM/Early College design.
  • Offsite experiences in science, technology, engineering and math including: taking courses at a higher education institution, research in a lab, internships with a STEM based company, independent study of a particular STEM field.

In addition to the academic program for a STEM school, partnerships with business and higher education are critical to the success of the EdWorks STEM schools. Both business and higher education are intimately involved in the design and delivery of the curriculum and real world experiences. The commitment from the community is part of the power of a STEM school as they are dedicated to preparing the next generation of innovators in science, technology, and math.
